Lawmakers express qualm over govt decision to provide Rs 5 million to leader Koirala

The parliamentarians from various political parties, including the major opposition CPN-UML, have expressed their disagreement with the government’s decision to provide Nepali Congress leader

Sujata Koirala Rs 5 million for the treatment of breast cancer. A meeting of Cabinet on Sunday had made decision to this effect. Speaking in the ‘special hour’ in today’s meeting of the Legislature-Parliament, Prakash Jwala argued that the decision to avail leader Koirala the amount from the state coffers in an ad- hoc manner (without proper working procedure) had send a wrong message among the public. Jwala condemned, “It is utterly wrong to make decision to fund upto Rs 5 million for the treatment of a resourceful person while ordinary citizens are dying in want of treatment.” Comparing two incidents – the government providing Rs 6 million to former President Dr Ram Baran Yadav for his treatment and some allowances to his aide and a woman from Rolpa dying in Bhairahawa due to financial constraint, Jwala questioned, “How could this be justified?”
